Material Studies at Sankt Markus Plads

Testing different brick tiles on site to understand how they interact with the church and its surroundings - and how their color, texture and character change in different light and weather conditions.

Material samples can tell us a lot, but seeing them in their actual context tells us more. Getting to know the materials we work with - how they look, feel and change over time - is an important part of the design process.

With CTR’s upcoming installation of a new district heating line beneath Forchhammersvej, we have a unique opportunity to rethink the space in front of Sankt Markus Church.

Forchhammersvej will be transformed into a shared street shaped around pedestrians and cyclists, while maintaining access for cars and all existing parking spaces. The new street will provide step-free access to the church, improve traffic safety and create new opportunities for planting, climate adaptation, outdoor activities and places to gather and spend time around the church.

In collaboration with Julie Kierkegaard Landskab, Rambøll, Frederiksberg Kommune, Sankt Markus Kirken, and Harris Tegl.
