The proposal reimagines Forchhammersvej as a public space rather than a traffic corridor. A new continuous paving surface, green rain gardens, integrated stormwater management, bicycle parking, and places to sit create a safer and more inviting setting around the church. At the same time, accessibility is improved through step-free access to all church entrances, while lower vehicle speeds enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
The vision is to create the square that St. Mark’s Church has never had: a green and welcoming public space that brings together the church, the local community, and the surrounding city. The project also lays the foundation for a broader transformation of the adjacent public spaces, strengthening the connection to Julius Thomsens Plads and establishing a coherent cultural and green destination in Frederiksberg.
Since 1902, St. Mark's Church has been a defining landmark in Frederiksberg. Despite lending its name to Sankt Markus Plads, the church has never been granted an actual civic square that it deserves. Today, roads and parking dominate the site, leaving little space for everyday life or community gathering.
Over the past decades, the church has developed into a vibrant cultural and social venue, hosting activities for all age groups. During larger events, the space around the main entrance often becomes overcrowded, and the existing streetscape offers limited opportunities for gathering, lingering, and informal use.
The planned replacement of a district heating main along Forchhammersvej creates a unique opportunity to rethink the public space around the church. The street level must be raised to accommodated the underground infrastructure, and the following
