First phase of Sankt Markus Plads approved

We are pleased to share that the first phase of Sankt Markus Plads has been approved by Frederiksberg Municipality, marking a milestone towards transforming the area around Sankt Markus Kirke into a greener, safer and more inviting public space.

The project takes advantage of CTR’s upcoming installation of a new district heating line beneath Forchhammersvej. Rather than simply restoring the street to its existing condition afterwards, the necessary infrastructure work becomes an opportunity to rethink the space in front of the church.

Forchhammersvej will be transformed into a shared street shaped around pedestrians and cyclists, while maintaining access for cars and all existing parking spaces. The new street will provide step-free access to the church, improve traffic safety and create new opportunities for planting, climate adaptation, outdoor activities and places to gather and stay around the church.

The approved first phase is part of a larger ambition for Sankt Markus Plads. By gradually rethinking the spaces surrounding the church, the project seeks to create a more coherent public realm - one that strengthens the relationship between the church and the city and gives Sankt Markus Kirke an urban setting that reflects its prominent presence in Frederiksberg.
