Restoring the historic doors of Sankt Markus

At the Sankt Markus Church in Frederiksberg, the restoration of the historic timber doors combines traditional craftsmanship with contemporary fabrication techniques.

Years of exposure to the elements left the doors worn and damaged, and several of the original copper studs were missing. The restoration focused on repairing what remained and carefully recreating what was lost.

The surviving studs were measured and digitally modelled, then 3D printed to create moulds for casting new copper replicas. The timber doors were repaired and sanded, before being finished with six coats of protective varnish.

Throughout the process, the aim was to preserve the original details, patina and traces of use while protecting the doors from further deterioration.

In collaboration with Valdemars Gård and Sankt Markus Kirken.
